3 Reasons You'll LOVE Building a Terrarium
It's the hottest old trend in cultivating. While terrariums have been around since the 1800s, the art of developing these tiny ecosystems has received new attention with the availbility of a beautiful variety of vessels, plants, and tiny decorative details.
Since we love all things green and growing, we can't wait any longer to share the three reasons we think you'll LOVE building a terrarium.
1. Terrariums provide an educational experience.
We've mentioned that terrariums are tiny, self-contained ecosystems, but what exactly does that mean?
Generally speaking, there are three types of terrariums—succulent, tropical, and desert (cacti). Stone and sand or soil layers, moisture level, and whether the vessel is open or closed are all dependent on which type of terrarium you decide to build. For example, a closed tropical terrarium will have enough moisture and humidity to maintain its own watering cycle, and so you may see condensation "rain drops" falling down the sides of the vessel to water the plants below—very cool and very scientific. What a great opportunity to share this environmental experiment with kids or grandkids!
2. Terrariums are easy to care for.
When set up properly, the terrarium can thrive with only a small amount of regular attention. Matching the right type of plants to the right type of vessel and organic matter will help ensure that maintenance is a breeze. Keeping an eye on the moisture level and ensuring it is appropriate for your plant type is most important.
Luckily, we have a great book, Terrarium Imaginarium, that provides useful tips for terrarium care!
3. Terrariums are a beautiful addition to your decor.
The layers of stone and soil, the various textures of plants, the vibrant colors, the uniquely shaped vessels—there really is something magical about these tiny, living environments. They truly are a little, self-contained world of their own.
For new AND seasoned growers, terrariums provide a truly satisfying cultivating experience. We KNOW you'll love building and caring for your terrarium. So, be sure to stop by Angel 101 to check out our supply of vessels, plants, tools and more. Happy planting!
